NeSA Writing Practice Test Available and Other Writing Tools:
The NeSA Writing practice tests for grades 8 and 11 are now located on the NeSA Cal Testing website. Here are instructions to download the information:
If you already have the NeSA test Icon on your desktop, do this two-step process :
- Click/open the NeSA icon. It should automatically upgrade to the 6.7 version and will show a popup box that says it is upgrading
- Open the website: https://nesa.caltesting.org, click “downloads”. Next screen click CAL Version 6.7 / next screen choose CAL Windows or CAL Mac / on the next screen, scroll until you see the “Dictionary zip file” link, click it. When this opens, you’ll see a folder titled “data”. Drag the folder to the NeSA icon on your desktop and it will automatically load the new version dictionary for the writing test. (You can test this by trying to open the writing practice test – it won’t open without the new dictionary.)
You should now be able to open the NeSA icon and use the tutorial and practice tests. This is the same icon where students will log on to take the operational tests when they are available.
If you do not already have the NeSA test icon on your desktop, do this:
- Open the website: https://nesa.caltesting.org, click “downloads”. Next screen click CAL Version 6.7 / next screen choose CAL Windows or CAL Mac / next screen choose Download CAL Now!
When the download is complete, you should find the NeSA icon on your desktop ready to use and you do not have to separately download the dictionary, it is included in the 6.7 version download.

Grade 4 - These samples of student writing are responses to the writing prompt for the 2009-2010 Nebraska Statewide Writing Assessment for students in Grade 4.
The example of PROFICIENT writing represents the minimum proficient level of performance on the assessemnt. the example of EXEMPLARY writing represents the highest score possible on the assessment.
Grade 8 - These samples of student writing are responses to the writing prompt for the 2009-2010 Nebraska Statewide Writing Assessment for students in Grade 8.
